Formula & explanation
Flooring area is length times width. The waste allowance covers cuts, mistakes, and future repairs — 10% for straightforward rectangular rooms, 15%+ for diagonal layouts or rooms with many corners. Box count uses the square-foot coverage printed on your specific product's packaging.
Example calculation
12 × 15 ft room, 22.5 sq ft/box, 10% waste:
Area = 180 sq ft × 1.10 = 198 sq ft ÷ 22.5 = 8.8 → 9 boxes of flooring.
Buying & project-planning tips
- Check the coverage per box on the exact product you're buying — it varies by brand and plank size.
- Add 5% more for diagonal installations and rooms with lots of corners or closets.
- Keep 1–2 unopened boxes for future repairs — patterns get discontinued.
- Buy underlayment separately for laminate; most hardwood and vinyl plank include it or need none.
- Acclimate hardwood and laminate to the room for 48 hours before installation per manufacturer instructions.

Most retailers accept returns of unopened, undamaged boxes within 30–90 days with a receipt. Keep them clean and dry.
